Biographical Notes

John Wilson was born June 26, 1837, at Greatham, near Hartlepool. His mother died before he was five, his father before he was twelve. At the age of eleven he was working for fourpencehalfpenny a day in ironstone quarries at Stanhope-in-Weardale. A year later he began work at Ludworth colliery, five miles from Durham. After working in other mines, at the age of nineteen he went to sea for several years; came back to the mines; married and emigrated to the United States of America; and finally came back in 1867, and worked at Haswell Colliery. In 1869-70 he took an active part in the formation of the union and for his share in that work was dismissed. "But if he had lost the confidence of his employers, he had gained that of his fellow-workmen by his efforts on their behalf." In 1878 he was appointed secretary of the Durham Miners' Political Reform Association. In 1882 he was elected treasurer of the Durham Miners' Association and, on the death of William Crawford in 1890 was made Financial Secretary. Shortly after his return from the United States he became a Primitive Methodist and in 1870 was approved as a local preacher. At the General Election of 1885 he was elected for Houghton-le-Spring Division of Durham, but lost his seat in 1886. The death of Crawford on July 1st caused a by-election in Mid-Durham. Wilson won the seat and held it for a quarter of a century. John Wilson was possessed of very considerable debating power and he defended the position in the north-eastern counties strongly and even provocatively.
