Thornton, William Mundell, O.B.E., D.Sc., D.Eng., M.I.E.E. Professor of Electrical Engineering in Armstrong College, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Born 1870. Engineering apprenticeship and works until 1892, University College, Liverpool, 1st class honours Physics, 1895; 2nd class honours Engineering 1896; President Students' Representative Council, 1895-6; lecturer in engineering, University College, Bristol, 1896-8; lecturer in electrical engineering, Armstrong College, 1898-1906; professor to date; president of the Association of M ining Electrical Engineers, 1920.21; chairman of the Newcastle centre of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1906 to 1921. Has carried out many researches on the ignition of gases, in particular mine gas, and of coal dust, and on electrical and engineering subjects. Was engaged in the investigations of the West Stanley, Hulton, Lenghenydd and Cadder explosions. I Has acted as electrical adviser to various coal companies and public bodies. Publications - some 50 papers. See Science Abstracts, 1900, to date.

Educated at the Liverpool Institute, and at University College, Liverpool. President, Students' Representative Council, 1895-6; Lecturer in Engineering, University College, Bristol, 1896-8; Lecturer in Electrical Engineering, Armstrong College, 1898-1906; Professor to 1937; President of the Association of Mining Electrical Engineers. 1920-21. President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1934. Has carried out many researches on the ignition of gases, in particular mine gas, and of coal dust, and on electrical and engineering subjects. Awarded the Greenwell Gold Medal for researches on the Safe Use of Electricity in Coal Mines. Publications-some 80 papers. See Science Abstracts, 1900, to date. Private Address: Clifton Terrace, Forest Hall, Northumberland.
