Joseph Shaw

Biographical Notes

Shaw, Joseph. Chairman and Managing Director of Michael Whitaker Ltd., Leeds. Coal Owners and Exporters. Born in 1868 in Leeds. Commenced his career on North Eastern Railway, afterwards serving on the staff of the Micklefield Coal & Lime Co. Became the representative of the above firm before he obtained his present position. He was a President of the Humber Coal Exporters' and Shippers' Association, and was one of the founders of the Yorkshire Coal Exchange. He has also been President of the North of England Coal Traders' Association and the National Council of Coal Traders. During the war he was a member of the Central Executive Committee for the supply of coals to France and Italy, and also gave evidence in the Coal Exporters' interests before the Sankey Commission on the question of Nationalisation of Mines.
