Knight of the Order of St John of Jerusalem in England, Sedgefield House, Blaydon-on-Tyne, eldest son of John Bell Simpson, J.P., D.C.L., of Bradley Hall, Wylam-on-Tyne; born April 12, 1864. Educated at Rugby and Durham Physical College. Served appprenticeship as a Mining Engineer, partly with his father, and partly with the late George May, at Harton Collieries, South Shields, and with the late J. G. Weeks at Bedlington Collieries, Northumberland. He then went to Cannock Chase Collieries, of which the late Arthur Sopwith was Manager, first as Surveyor and then as Undermanager. He then became Manager at Pelsall Colliery, of which the late H. C. Peake was Managing Director. In 1896 he took up the position of Resident Mining Engineer at the Stella Coal Company's Collieries. In 1903 he became a Partner in the firm of John Bell Simpson & Son, Mining Engineers. Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace for the County of Durham. Was Parliamentary Candidate for Baydon Division, November, 1922.
