During the war served as head of production department of control of coal mines, and technical adviser to the Controller of coal mines. Chairman of Imperial Mineral Resources Bureau; Member of Committee appointed to inquire into the probable economic effect of a limit of 8 hours to the working of coal mines; Chairman of Coal Mining Organisation Committee; a member of Coal Conservation Committee and Coal Exports Committee of Board of Trade; Vice-Chairman of Coal and Coke supplies Committee and a member of Fuel Research Board. Author of several standard works on Coal Mining.
