Biographical Notes

Raine, Walter, J.P., M.P. Chairman of J. Raine & Son Ltd., Coal Exporters and Shipbrokers, Sunderland and Newcastle-on-Tyne. Born in Sunderland in 1874, and educated at the N.E.C.S., Barnard Castle. Entered his father's office (the late Mr. John Raine, who was the founder of the firm), and became a partner in 1901. In addition to his business, has taken an active part in the Municipal life of Sunderland. Elected a Member of the Town Council in 1902, and has held the position ever since. In November 1920, became Mayor, from which he retired last November. Senior Member of Parliament for Sunderland in November, 1922. Vice-President of the Sunderland Chamber of Commerce, and takes a great interest in the commercial life of his native town.

Born in Sunderland in 1874, and educated at the N.E.C.S., Barnard Castle. Entered his father's office (the late Mr. John Raine, who was the founder of the firm). and became a partner in 1901. In addition to his business, has taken an active part in the Municipal life of Sunderland. Elected a member of the Town Council in 1902, and has held the position ever since. Elected Alderman, July, 1926. In November, 1920, became Mayor, from which he retired in November, 1922. Member of Parliament for Sunderland, 1922-29. Ex-President, Associated Chambers of Commerce of Great Britain. Ex-Chairman, The British Coal Exporters' Federation. Address: Maritime Buildings, Sunderland.
