Mottram, Thomas Harry, C.B.E. Started as articled pupil (afterwards assistant) to the late Mr. Samuel Spruce, F.G.S., and to Mr. Hy. J. Martin, M.Inst.C.E. For six and a half years manager of collieries in North Staffs and Bristol coalfields. Appointed H.M. Assistant Inspector of Mines in April, 1889; Inspector in charge of West of Scotland District, November 1909, Liverpool and North Wales District June, 1910, and York and North Midland Division, July, 1912, successively. H.M. Chief Inspector of Mines, December, 1920. Member of (1) Deep and Hot Mines Research Committee, January, 1920; (II) Oxygen Research Committee, March, 1921; (III) Executive Committee of the British Industrial ôSafety Firstö Association, May, 1921; (IV) Safety in Mines Research Board, July, 1921; (V) the Board for Mining Examinations, October, 1921, etc., etc., The following honorary positions have been held : - Vice-President of the Mining Engineers and of the Mining institute of Scotland; and President of the Western Branch of the Scottish Federated Institute of Mining Students. Awarded Albert Medal for gallantry at the Baddesley Colliery disaster, February 1883. C.B.E. for special war services, January, 1918.

Mottram, Sir T. H., C.B.E., A.M., M.I.Min.E. Articled pupil (afterwards assistant) to the late Mr. Samuel Spruce, F.G.S., and to Mr. Hy. Martin, M.Inst.C.E. For 6½ years Manager of mines in North Staffs and Bristol coalfields. Appointed H.M. Assistant Inspector of Mines in April, 1889; Inspector in Charge of West of Scotland District, November, 1909; Liverpool and North Wales District, June, 1910; and York and North Midland Division, July, 1912, successively. Late H. M. Chief Inspector of Mines, December, 1920 (retired from Inspectorate, June 20th, 1924). Member of Safety in Mines Research Board, July, 1921-30. Chairman, Rescue Regulations Committee, 1923-30. and of Support of Workings in Mines Committee since 1924. Member of Water Dangers Committee, 1923. Member of Haulage Committee, 1930, and of Wire Ropes Committee, 1924-30. Late Commissioner for holding special enquiries into cause and circumstances of mine disasters. Awarded Albert Medal for gallantry at the Baddesley Colliery disaster, February, 1883. C.B.E. for special war services, January, 1918. Knighted, 1924. Address: The White House, Bessacarr, Doncaster.
