Biographical Notes
Memoir of Henry Lawrence.
By John H. Merivale.
Henry Lawrence, who was born in London on October 7th, 1825, was a son of the late Mr. William Lawrence, cashier, of London, his mother being a daughter of the late Mr. W. Easeley, miller, of Stratford-on-Avon.
Mr. Lawrence commenced his education at a private school in London, and later continued his studies at Kings College.
He began his professional career as a pupil with Messrs. James Simpson & Company, of Grosvenor Road. Pimlico, London, the eminent hydraulic engineers, and one of his earliest professional recollections was in connexion with the christening of the Prince of Wales (now King Edward VII.), which took place at Windsor in 1841, where he was present as one of the employees of the above firm, who had charge of the water-supply in case of fire.
Mr. Lawrence made such progress that he was early put in charge by Messrs. James Simpson & Company of various contracts made by that firm, amongst others that might be mentioned being the Whittle Dene Water-works, which gave Newcastle-upon-Tyne its first gravity supply of water, and the mechanical engineering work connected with the docks at West Hartlepool.
Mr. Lawrence came to settle in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1852, taking up the position of general manager at the Ouseburn Engine-works, subsequent to which he had paid a visit to San Francisco, in connexion with the gold-mining which flourished there at that date. In those days such a voyage was a long and tedious one, and the ship on which he commenced his return journey was wrecked on a small island in the Pacific. There was no water to be found on the island, and in due time the supply obtained from the wreck ran short, but Mr. Lawrence' s engineering knowledge stood him in good stead, and, by means of tanks and other apparatus, he was able to improvise a condensing-plant, by the use of which he succeeded in distilling fresh water from the sea.
Mr. Lawrence remained at the Ouseburn Engine-works for about four years, when a position with his old firm was offered to and accepted by him. He, however, returned to Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1860, to take up the position of manager at the Walker Iron-works, belonging to Messrs. Losh, Wilson, & Bell. He remained with this firm for eight years, when he became general manager of the Grange Iron-works, Durham, a position which he held for exactly thirty years.
Ten years ago, Mr. Lawrence resigned his position as general manager of the Grange Iron-works, and settled in Newcastle-upon-Tyne as a consulting engineer. This afforded him more leisure, but he continued to take an active interest in. the various institutions with which he was connected to within a few days of his death.
Whilst at the Grange Iron-works, Mr. Lawrence, in 1878, in conjunction with the late Mr. John Daglish, patented an automatic expansion gearing for colliery winding- and other engines, * which was extensively adopted, and is at present in use on several colliery winding-engines. He also, in 1883, in conjunction with the late Mr. R. M. Ogle, patented a differential valve-gear for pumping and other engines,** which was adopted at three collieries at least in the North of England, namely, Littletown, Broomhill, and Ouston, the working in every case being most successful.
During his association with the Grange Iron-works, Mr. Lawrence established a large connexion with various South African mining companies, supplying them with a great variety of plant, -including air-compressors, conveyors, etc. His general knowledge and experience were such that he was able to tackle almost any problem in mechanical engineering, and he was often able thereby to obtain a variety of work when there was any slackness in those specialities for which the Grange Iron Company, Limited, more particularly laid themselves out.
Mr. Lawrence was held in high repute as a valuer of colliery plant, and in very many cases in the North of England where collieries changed ownership he was called in to assess the value of the plant, railways, etc.
Mr. Lawrence became a member of The North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers on August 1st, 1868, and was elected a member of the Council in the year 1882. serving on that body practically without a break until his death. He attended the meetings regularly up to the last, and took a great interest and an active part in the discussions of the various papers read before the Institute. He also contributed the following papers to the Transactions -
"The Danger of Sparks produced from Prickers and Stemmers used for Blasting Purposes in Coal-mines, and Sparks otherwise Produced."
"An Improved Watering-tub for Laying Dust in Coal-mines."
He passed away at his residence, 13, Devonshire Place, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, on November 22nd, 1908, in his eighty-fourth year, and was buried in St. Andrew's Cemetery in that city three days later.
