Lessing, R., Ph.D., F.I.C., F.C.S., F.Inst.F., M.I.Chem.E., M.Inst. Gas E., M.Inst.P.T., M.I.Min.E. Consulting Chemist and Chemical Engineer. Hon. Secretary of the Coal Research Club. Has conducted extensive researches on the constitution of coal, on carbonisation, and in connection with coal products. Has devised standard method and apparatus for carbonisation assay. Has laid foundations for investigation of mineral constituents in coal and their distribution. Pioneer of clean coal. Patentee of processes for the dedusting and gravity separation of coal, briquetting, production of dry neutral sulphate of ammonia, packing towers with contact rings, and many others. Member of numerous technical institutions and special committees ; joint founder and editor of "Fuel and Science in Practice" author of many publications. William Young Memorial and Cantor Lecturer. Lessing, R., Ph.D., F.I.C., F.C.S., F.Inst.F., M.I.Chem.E., M.Inst. Gas E., M.Inst.Pet., M.I.Min.E. Consulting Chemist and Chemical Engineer. Hon. Secretary of the Coal Research Club. Conducted extensive researches on the constitution of coal, coal cleaning, carbonisation and combustion, atmospheric pollution, causation of silicosis, etc. Introduced standard methods for carhonising assay and the rational analysis of coal ash. Laid foundations for the investigation of mineral constituents in coal and their distribution. Pioneer of clean coal. Patentee of processes for dedusting and gravity separation of coal, briquetting, hydrogenation, solvent fractionation of coal tar, production of dry neutral sulphate of ammonia, packing towers with contact rings. elimination of dust and sulphur from flue gases. Published many papers in scientific and technical jouruals; delivered William Young Memorial Lecture on "Catalysis in the Gas Industry," 1914, and Cantor Lectures on "Coal Ash and Clean Coal," 1925. Gave evidence on "The Possibilities and Prospects of Developments in the Treatment of Coal" before the Royal Commission on the Coal Industry, 1925. Gave evidence before Inquiry by Electricity Commissioners into the building of the new Fulham Power Station, and worked out and devised flue gas washing process and liquor treatment plant incorporated in that Station. Member of numerous scientific societies and technical institutions, serving on many of their councils and committees. Vice-President Society of Chemical Industry.
