Born at Birtley, County Durham, 1859. Educated at Brampton and College of Science, Newcastle. Served apprenticeship as mining engineer in Durham and West Yorkshire Coalfields. Past President of North of England Branch of National Association of Colliery Managers. J.P. for Durham County, being Chairman of Chester-le-Street Division.
