Biographical NotesHallsworth, Sir Joseph. Was a Member of the National Coal Board. Sir Joseph is 64 years of age and is a recognised authority on international labour conditions and was a member of the Governing Body of the International Labour Organisation until 1948. He was President of the Trades Union Congress in 1938-1939 and was a Member of the General Council of that body from 1926 to 1947. A member of many Government Committees before and during the war years and since, he received a knighthood in 1946; whilst in 1942, Manchester University bestowed upon him the honorary degree of Master of Arts. He has written many books on the working conditions of shop and office employees. He was Chairman of the Miners' Welfare Commission and the National Miners' Welfare Joint Council.
