Biographical Notes

Thomas Crawford, Esq., died at his residence in Church-street, Durham, on Thursday, Sept. 25th, at the patriarchal age of 83. Deceased was one of those men — happily by no means rare in these northern counties — who, by indomitable perseverance, joined to extensive knowledge, make the most difficult circumstances subserve to their wishes. In early life Mr. Crawford was employed as a clerk in a coal office, where it would appear the aspirations for the acquirement of a colliery were first felt. In conjunction with Mr. Michael Robson, of Chester-le-Street, a shaft was sunk a little to the west of Chester-le-Street, and near the present reservoir. The work was not destined, however to be successful. It was found impossible to overcome the vast volumes of water which burst out, and the work was relinquished. Not disconcerted by his first failure, Mr. Crawford the removed to Kepier Colliery, and shortly after took that of Elvet. Mr. Crawford had now acquired a high character for the management of collieries, and was appointed by the late Earl of Durham as viewer for the extensive collieries belonging to his lordship. Here Mr. Crawford’s reputation extended, and attracted the attention of Henry Stobart, Esq., of Etherley, who willingly entered into an agreement with Mr. Crawford to work the coal under "Harrington Estate," several seams of which had been partly, while others had not been wrought at all. In addition, the partners wrought the George Pit, the 2nd pit, the 3rd pit, and the Lumley west pit. As a colliery viewer and colliery proprietor, Mr. Crawford was esteemed by the great number of men in his employ, and he entered heartily into any project calculated to advance their welfare. On Monday. Sept. 28th, the remains of the deceased were deposited in the family vault at Chester-le-Street, many old friends attending to pay their tribute of respect to one who had put to good use the talents which had been entrusted to him, leaving behind him an honourable name and the marks of his genius, perseverance, and ability.
