I. — Introductory
The Montagu Colliery is situated at Scotswood in the Parish of Sugley, about three and a half miles west of the General Post Office, Newcastle-on-Tyne. The lessees are William Benson & Son, Limited.
The Colliery consists of two shafts known as the "Caroline" and "View" pits, respectively.
At the time of the accident there were being worked from the Caroline Pit, the Beaumont, Tilley, Five Quarter and Brockwell Seams, and from the View Pit, the Tilley and Brockwell Seams. It is only with the Brockwell Seam that this Report is concerned.
A section of the View Pit downcast shaft, showing the position of the various seams, is given in Plate I.
The accident which was the subject of my investigation occurred on Monday, 30th March, 1925, at a place known as "Robson's Bord Flat, in the Brockwell Seam, on the eastern verge of the workings from the View Pit. The precise spot will be described in more detail hereafter.
The mineral leasehold of William Benson & Son, Limited, is immediately contiguous on the east with the mineral leasehold of William Cochran Carr, Limited. Both leaseholds are comprised in what is known as the Benwell Estate of Benwell Royalty, and are held of the same landlord. The Brockwell Seam, which extends throughout both leaseholds, is included in the minerals let respectively to William Benson & Son, Limited, and to William Cochran Carr, Limited.
