Prosecutions by Direction of the Secretary for Mines.

Description of Defendant Offence Charged Result of Proceedings Penalty Costs

Mine: Ravensworth, Owners:
Legal proceedings were taken against the manager, under-manager and a horsekeeper of Ravensworth Colliery, Durham, for breaches of Section 45 and the Third Schedule of the Coal Mines Act. Upon three informations the manager was convicted and fined, and upon two others the cases were dismissed. The under-manager wad convicted and fined under Clause 13 of the Third Schedule, and the case against the horsekeeper for failing to make a proper report was dismissed
 
Mine: Seaton Delaval, Owners: Seaton Delaval Coal Co. Ltd.
Legal proceedings were taken against the agent and manager of Seaton Delaval Colliery, Northumberland, for breaches of Sections 51, 63 and 67 of the Coal Mines Act. The cases against the agent were dismissed, and in that against the manager, for failing to keep a sufficicent supply of timber in certain parts of the mine, he was convicted and fined. The cases against bot under Sections 63 and 67 of the Act were adjourned sine die
 
Mine: Pickering Quarry, Owners:
In accordance with your instructions, the owner of Pickering Quarry, Yorks, was charged withg failing to fence the revolving pan of a grinding mill ; failing to have a report of the result of the examination of a steam boiler ; and failing to post the Abstract of the Act. He was fined for the latter, and as regards the two former charges, as the defendant had complied with the requirements since the summonses were issued, the bench declined to make any order thereon.
