Shaw, James, aged 65, Quarryman, He was barring down a loose stone — about 3 cwt. — from a ledge 2 feet above the quarry floor. No one actually witnessed the accident, but apparently he slipped and the stone rolled on to him. A fatal result was not anticipated, but he died just a week after the accident [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Shaw, William, aged 45, Sinker, fell down shaft; whilst putting up some hoarding to protect the workmen from the storm of wind and rain raging at the time, the wind caught a board the deceased was carrying, and knocked him down the shaft

Simpson, Joseph, aged 48, Hewer, He had just got on to a waggon to ride up an incline on the private branch railway, when he was jolted off on the set starting, and fell under the wheels. Notices are posted at the bottom and top of the bank prohibiting riding, but as a conviction cannot be obtained against an offender, they are apparently of very little use

Slater, Joseph William, aged 36, Quarryman, he was engaged along with the owner of the quarry in working a piece of stone from the face when another stone unexpectedly came away; the owner, who was standing in a position of danger, jumped and was fortunate in getting clear, but deceased instead of remaining where he was, in a position of safety, also jumped, and his boot heel getting fast, he fell backwards and struck a stone with his head, fracturing his neck

Smith, Thomas, aged 30, Rubble Breaker, A charge of dynamite exploded in a shot hole, while he was attempting to withdraw a wooden stemmer which had become fast in the hole, and killed him

Smith, William, aged 52, Engineman, He was suddenly taken ill on his engine and died immediately after being taken home. The doctor's evidence was to the effect that he had died from heart disease. Verdict of the jury accordingly.

Stenman, Matthew, aged 9, Matthew Stenman, aged nine, was killed on 19 September. He had been riding on some coal waggons underneath the screens when his hand was caught on them. He was pulled onto the railway and the waggons went over his legs, head and one of his wrists

Stewart, William, aged 17, Labourer, He was filling a cart, when a huge mass of sand slipped away and completely covered him. Two youths who were standing near, were also suffocated by the same rush of sand, but as they were not employed at the quarry, they are not included in the list. [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Stobart, Joseph, died from pneumonia; an effort was made to attribute the death to a colliery accident, but the medical evidence was directly opposed to that view, and the latter version was accepted by the jury

Stokoe, William, aged 48, Quarryman, Deceased, who wore clogs, was working on a ledge about 4 feet wide, about 15 feet from the top of the quarry and about 30 feet from the bottom. He called to two men working below that he was about to roll a stone over, and one of them saw him do so, and then saw another stone, about 2 feet square and 1 foot thick, roll forward behind him and catch him about the ankles, and he fell head first to the bottom of the quarry, alighting on a heap of rough stones. He was unconscious, and never regained consciousness, his skull being fractured., (accident: 23 Apr 1906)

Styan, William, aged 52, Owner and Manager, he was going to the quarry to see some repairs that were being done to an engine, and must have mistaken his way, owing to a fog, and fell over into the quarry, a distance of 20 ft.; receiving such injuries that he died on the 13th inst., (accident: 10 Nov 1898)
