Slater, Joseph William, aged 36, Quarryman, he was engaged along with the owner of the quarry in working a piece of stone from the face when another stone unexpectedly came away; the owner, who was standing in a position of danger, jumped and was fortunate in getting clear, but deceased instead of remaining where he was, in a position of safety, also jumped, and his boot heel getting fast, he fell backwards and struck a stone with his head, fracturing his neck |

Stokoe, William, aged 48, Quarryman, Deceased, who wore clogs, was working on a ledge about 4 feet wide, about 15 feet from the top of the quarry and about 30 feet from the bottom. He called to two men working below that he was about to roll a stone over, and one of them saw him do so, and then saw another stone, about 2 feet square and 1 foot thick, roll forward behind him and catch him about the ankles, and he fell head first to the bottom of the quarry, alighting on a heap of rough stones. He was unconscious, and never regained consciousness, his skull being fractured., ( accident: 23 Apr 1906) |
