Keir, Stephen, Cartman, He was passing along the highway at Wallsend with his cart when he was run over at the level crossing of the private railway running from Killingworth Colliery to the staithes by a set of full waggons. For some reason the watchman had left his post, and the jury brought in a verdict to the effect — "That the accident occurred through the defective system of the signalling, watching and lighting at the said crossing, and with a view of protecting the public against similar accidents in future, the jury strongly recommend that the owners of the railway take immediate steps for improving the same." |
