At the inquest Robert Stubbs, deputy, said that on 12 August he was working in the Bandy Seam, Hall Drift, Etherley Dene Colliery. On making his rounds he came to a place where Thomas Tarran was timbering the roof. Tarran told him there had been a small fall of stone, some of which had struck his left leg below the knee. The leg was bleeding slightly.
Tarran was admitted to Durham County Hospital on 28 September suffering from abscesses on the left leg. He died on 5th December from euremia, due to toxic nephritis. A verdict of "Accidental death" was returned.
