Following a fall of unusal dimensions in Ellington pit yesterday, workmen laboured for 2 hours excavating the body of James William Armstrong, a married mine worker, of Juliet Street, Ashington.
Many tons of stone had fallen, and the body was badly mutilated. Armstrong had been engaged in his work as a conveyor chock-drawer when the fall occurred in the High Main seam and completely buried him. It is understood that the fall is of considerable extent and that as a result extensive reconstruction work will be necessary.
