Colliery:  Crookhall Humber Hill
Cause:  Struck by tubs
Lives Lost:  1

Description

A landing attendant was killed at Crookhall Humber Hill Colliery, Durham. He was travelling towards a surface landing where he was employed when he was struck from behind by the foremost tub of an empty set which was being hauled into the landing at a speed of about three miles per hour by main and tail rope haulage. It was daylight at the time, there was a clear space of six yards at the side, he was well acquainted with the landing and knew that the empty set was approaching. Had he exercised ordinary caution the accident should have been avoided.
