| Date: | 14th January 1936 |
| Colliery: | Ushaw Moor |
| Cause: | Hit by door |
| Lives Lost: | 1 |
At Ushaw Moor Colliery, Durham, a coal hewer was travelling outbye on a level putting road. He had almost reached a wooden separation door, 3 ft. 9 in. high by 4 ft. 6 in. wide, when the door swung back and struck him, fracturing his skull. The door swung open due to a putter pushing a full tub against it. Means were afterwards provided to enable separation doors to be opened from a point outside the arc of the swing of the door. The extent of the injury might have been minimized had a safety hat been worn.
