SAFETY HELMETS MANY INJURIES SAVED IN NORTH PITS The general use of safety helmets in mines was urged by the Sunderland Coroner (Mr. J. C. Morton), yesterday, at an inquest on a miner who was wearing a helmet when he was struck by a fall of stone. The inquest was held on Joseph Robson Morton (27), a machine driller at Easington Colliery, who lived in Carol Street, Easington Colliery. A verdict of "Accidental death" was returned. After the jury had been shown the safety-helmet which Morton was wearing at the time of his accident the Coroner said "The fall from the roof came upon his head and although he was wearing this safety helmet a stone appears to have gone through the helmet and caused an injury. "I have previously had an opportunity of testing these helmets, and if you beat that helmet with an iron bar I don't think you will be able to make the slightest impression on it. "Although it was not the means of saving this man's life these helmets must have saved very many injuries in cases where they have been worn, and I hope that the practice of wearing them will become universal."
