Description

At Mainsforth Colliery, Durham, a ropeman was assisting to push a tram of sleepers into position for unloading on a junction. He slipped and fell heavily on a plank which formed part of a wooden covering above a six feet in diameter horizontal haulage sheave. The plank broke in half owing to dry rot and he removed the broken portions whilst he continued to unload the tram. Later, in a moment of forgetfulness, he stepped into the hole with the result that one of his legs became entangled in the revolving sheave. The flooring had been examined on the day prior to the accident but the dry rot had not been detected. An expanded metal guard totally enclosing the haulage sheave was afterwards fitted beneath the wood cover.
