Wherever possible inclined stays should be set to top coal or band before commencing to remove bottom coal. In the absence of inclined stays, upright props and heads set to support the overhanging coal or stone are only too often canted out. Such a case occurred at Dipton Colliery, Durham. Two putting hewers were working at the face of a bordways lift in a seam comprising two feet top coal, 1 ft. 8 in. dirt band and 2 ft. 11 in. bottom coal. The bottom coal and band were extracted so that the top coal was overhanging over a length of 15 feet to a maximum depth of four feet. About three tons of this top coal fell, canting out an upright prop and head. One of the men was killed and the other injured.
