| Colliery: | Mainsforth |
| Cause: | Underground Haulage Accident |
| Lives Lost: | 1 |
A driver, aged 15 years, with only nine months' experience below ground, was killed at Mainsforth Colliery, Durham. He was leading his pony inbye on a main-and-tail haulage road, six feet high, and provided with a clear space of 2 ft. 8 ins. on the same side of the roadway as the refuge holes. When a set of 60 full tubs approached he stood in a refuge hole, retaining hold of his pony. As the set was passing, the pony became restive, and lifting its head, swung him between two of the tubs on the set. The practice of allowing any person, and especially a young lad, to travel with a pony on a road where the haulage is in motion, cannot be too strongly condemned.
