Description

A hewer was fatally burned at Dean and Chapter Colliery, Durham. For some unknown reason, and in contravention of the General Regulations, he passed through a fence and travelled 30 yards up an abandoned road rising 10 inches to the yard. He had almost reached the face which was standing at a small fault when his open acetylene lamp ignited a small accumulation of firedamp. Safety lamps were at once installed throughout the seam.
