Two men were accidentally killed in the Brockwell Seam, No. 1 Pit, Dean and Chapter Colliery, Ferryhill on 19 August when they were struck by a running set of tubs. Extract from inquest report in Durham County Advertiser and Durham Chronicle, 29 August 1930: It was revealed in evidence that the accident might have been caused by confused signalling in the pit, which would have the effect of tubs being 'tightened' instead of 'slackened'. Sam Kirby, a motor braker, said that he received three distinctive raps just before the accident occurred. This was a signal to 'tighten' the set, and this he did. Reference was made to the system of signalling in the mine, and replying to Mr. W. Wainwright (H.M. Inspector of Mines), the witness stated that it was possible that by using two uncovered portions of the signalling wire a man might make a mistake in signalling. Mr. Wainwright explained that it two bare wires were brought into contact with each other they would ring the bell. Any slight vibration, he added, might give three raps instead of two. The Coroner said it seemed that some irregularity on connection with the signalling had taken place. Something had gone wrong in regard to the rapping, but they could only return a verdict of "Accidentally killed."
