William Anderson, 17, was critically injured by a fall of stone at Dean and Chapter Colliery on 13 February, and died from his injuries at Durham County Hospital on the following day.

John Mattimoe, deputy, said Anderson was working under his direction as a stone putter in the Merrington Drift, which ran from the main coal to the Brockwell Seam at No. 3 Pit. Mattimoe had fired three bottom shots in the stone and on examination found the baulks and props in order, and no sign of any weakness in the roof, nor evidence of any breakers.

Thomas Henderson, stoneman, who was working in the same place as Anderson, said deceased was going to put a 'cow' on the last tub, when the fall occurred and caught him from the waist downwards.
