| Cause: | Struck by bucket from aerial ropeway |
| Lives Lost: | 1 |
At Dean and Chapter Colliery, Durham, an assistant keeper was killed when at work on an aerial ropeway. An empty bucket became displaced during transit and was removed from the carrier on its return to the loading station. The empty carrier had been detached from the rope and deceased was moving it by hand by means of the hangers along the overhead carrying rail but failed to observe that the carrier and hangers had tilted, owing to the fact that the bucket which normally kept it in a vertical position had been removed, with the result that it came in contact with an angle iron supporting the general structure, fell from the rail a distance of 7 ft. 6 ins, and struck him on the head. He died from his injuries very shortly afterwards. The accident was avoidable by the exercise of ordinary caution by deceased who was an experienced man and had had charge of the ropeway for thirteen years.
