William Henry Blenkiron, 16, died at Durham County Hospital on 25 June 1929 from chronic sepsis, following amputation of his left leg after being severely injured in the Harvey Seam, Thrislington Colliery on 10 December 1928. Three full tubs ran amain on an incline and crashed to the bottom, striking Blenkiron and hurling him against the empty tubs which were to have been hauled up as the full ones descended. It was the duty of a lad named Brown to attach the rope to the empty tubs, but he had forgotten. Mr. Mann, Assistant Deputy Coroner, said: "Ordinary common sense on the part of Brown would have prevented the accident . . . it appears to me to be a case of gross negligence than anything else."
