| Cause: | Crushed by tubs |
| Lives Lost: | 1 |
A datal lad was killed at Easington Colliery, Durham. He was lowering a set of 12 full tubs, controlled by drags, from the main haulage towards the shaft, down a roadway 10ft. by 8ft. and dipping 1 in 40, in which a large number of full tubs were standing. As the moving set approached the standing tubs he attempted to couple them and his head was crushed between the tubs. Deceased should have ‘waited until the tubs had come to rest. The management have since introduced "fenders," one of which is hung on the back of each set as it is lowered down the landing. This ensures plenty of room for coupling when the sets join and discourages attempts by the lads to couple the tubs before they have come to rest. I should like to see similar devices adopted at many other mines.
