Description

A fatality at Dean and Chapter Colliery, Durham, shows the necessity for orderly behaviour among persons waiting at the shaft entrance to ride. A workman, who was in front of a crowd of men waiting at the shaft inset to ascend to bank was jostled from behind and he fell and rolled under the shaft entrance gate. His head was caught by the cage as it was being slowly lowered to change decks and he sustained fatal injuries. The inset shaft gate was closed but it allowed a clear space of 14 ins. next the floor. Shaft gates should reach close to the floor in all cases, whilst at shafts where large numbers of persons have to ride some effective arrangements should be made to ensure that crowds cannot collect at the shaft entrance.
