A deputy was killed at Seghill Colliery, Northumberland. He was engaged in withdrawing roof supports on the tailgate of an abandoned conveyor face and was using an axe to knock out a prop which was supporting one end of a pair of gears, when a stone weighing about 6 tons fell from the roof and killed him instantly. The accident would have been avoided had he used the Sylvester which was near at hand.
