A deputy was killed at Brandon Pit House Colliery, Durham, by a fall of roof when he had almost completed the withdrawal of timber from a broken lift in a seam 3ft. thick with a blue roof. He knocked out a prop, 4ft. beyond the breaking off timber, with an axe, and a large portion of roof lift, by 8ft. 6ins. and 1ft. 3ins. thick, fell without warning, and killed him instantly. The accident would not have occurred if he had used the Sylvester which was at hand.
