Peter Hopper, 66, master shifter, was badly injured while working in the Ballarat seam, ‘C’ Pit, Brancepeth Colliery on 7th May. He sustained a compound fracture of the skull, and his nose and jaw were broken. Ten minutes after being admitted to hospital, he died from shock and haemorrhage.
At the inquest Frederick Kasher, 19, said he was working with the deceased who was going to fire a shot in the bottom canch. He had drilled a hole which Hopper charged and stemmed, and fixed in a fuse. He was then told to take out a prop and a headtree about a foot from the canch so they would not interfere with the shot. After removing the prop he turned round to throw the mell out, and Hopper stepped in to light the shot. The ramble suddenly came away and fell on Hopper, pinning him by the head and shoulders.
