Description

A driver was killed at Lumley 6th Colliery, Durham. On a haulage road about 50 yards from the face, deceased was about to attach his pony to the first of a set of 3 empty tubs when they moved forward, presumably due to other tubs bumping them at the outbye end, and crushed his head against a baulk which only allowed 4¾" clearance above the tub top. It should be remembered that in all parts of a roadway where tubs are coupled or uncoupled, safe clearance above the tubs is just as necessary as safe clearance between tubs standing on any rails and the side of the road nearest those rails, or between tubs standing on parallel rails.
