Description

An offtakes lad was killed at St. Hilda Colliery, Durham. Deceased was in the act of changing sockets on a main and tail haulage set and was using a single purchase hand winch for the purpose of pulling the tail rope end forward to the required position when he lost control of the handle and was struck on the head by it as it swung around in the opposite direction. Deceased had previously fastened the pawl in the "off" position. This fatality would have been avoided if the type of winch which I described in my report for last year had been in use.
