A fatality which illustrates the apathy of experienced men towards making use of refuge holes on haulage roads, occurred at Hamsterley Colliery, Durham, A haulage attendant of many years experience on this particular roadway was caught and killed by an empty set which was being hauled inbye. The haulage road was properly provided with refuge holes, and there was no apparent reason why deceased should not have entered one for safety, until the set passed.
