A screener was killed at Seghill Colliery, Northumberland. As far as is known, deceased was returning from the bait cabin to resume his work. He passed between the fifth and sixth wagons of a set of eight, standing on a gradient of 1 in 72. The position of his body and the injuries received were consistent with his having been crushed by a full wagon which had been lowered into the standing set. Had he elected to walk round the set — three wagon lengths below the bait cabin door — the accident could have been avoided.
