Description

A new brake path was being machined on a Koepe winding pulley, at Murton Colliery, Durham. Whilst a fitter was changing a tool the cutting edge caught a projection on the pulley. The rest cover plate was wrenched off and his hand was severely crushed between the plate and the pulley. He had almost recovered when erysipelas and pneumonia supervened and he died a month later. The doctor said the accident lowered his vitality and rendered him more susceptible to disease. The pulley should have been stopped when changing the tool.
