Shields Daily Gazette of Wednesday 2 January 1924 reported: "A verdict of death from natural causes was returned at an inquest held on William Albert Hawke (56) of 68 Brunswick Street. The widow, Hannah Hawke, said her husband was a shunter at St Hilda Colliery where he had been employed for 14 years. At 9.40pm on Thursday last he left home for work. A that time he appeared in good health. ... An engine driver named Nichol Haswell said about 11 o'clock on the night in question he was standing by his engine in company with Hawke at St Hilda Colliery. Deceased later left him in order to discharge certain duties. As he was absent about ten minutes, witness went in search of him and found him lying between the rails some 100 yards away with the side of his head resting on the metals."
