George Butterfield was killed by a fall of stone in the drift heading from the Harvey to the Hutton seam in Deaf Hill Colliery on 4th August.
He and George Jordan, stoneman, were fixing a girder to support the roof in the drift. After working about four hours a crack was made in the side of the drift which caused the whole place to come down. Jordan managed to escape, but Butterfield died instantly. It was thought the crack was caused by damp in the pit due to recent flooding.
