At the inquest into the death of Robert Dunn held on 9th December, "Alfred Skellhorn, chargeman, said he was one of a party sent out to widen a barrow way to make a flat, and for this purpose it was necessary to take down a portion of the south side, which measured about 14 feet by 5 feet. Before taking down the ramble and coal the put in 12 inch baulks and had four pairs of gears placed there. In about five or ten minutes after starting the whole length came away. The men jumped back, but Dunn was caught. The ambulance stretcher was obtained from the shaft bottom, and deceased was seen in the ambulance room by Dr. Farmer."
Death was due to hypostatic pneumonia following severe injuries.
