An inquest was held into the death of Edward Burdon at Durham County Hospital on 13th October. His brother, a putter in the same seam (Maudlin), said that Edward was leading a pony out with a full tub just as he was returning with an empty tub. He told him to go back to the flat was there was no room to pass. After waiting some time he began to push his tub and on passing the canvas door head a moan. On looking forward he saw Edward's head jammed between the top of the tub and a prop. Death was due to a fracture of the base of the skull.
