On 19th June 1914, Adamson and John Campbell had been casting stone which they had shot down into the goaf in the west way district of the Hutton seam. A fall of stone caught Adamson on the back as he was kneeling down at his work and fractured his spine. He spent six weeks at the County Hospital, returning home as incurable. After developing a spinal abscess, he gradually got weaker, and died from septicaemia on 12th August 1916.
