Died from injuries received the previous day. Laws and another deputy, J. Taylor, were shooting down a top caunch - other deputies were at work in the area at the time. Laws and Taylor fired their shot, and on hearing an explosion assumed it was theirs, so they went back in to check. They were only five yards away when their shot went off. Laws took the full blast, Taylor, who was a yard behind him, suffered an injury to his foot. Both men were unaware that two shots were being fired at the same time.
