At Brancepeth Colliery, Durham, a deputy lost his life in the following manner :— A top canch was being taken down through a depression in a roadway. Work was proceeding from either end, and the two canches were 40 yards apart at the time of the accident. Deceased and another deputy prepared and lighted a shot at one end and then retired to a refuge hole 30 yards away. They waited some minutes and on hearing a report returned to the canch. The shot there exploded when deceased was about 5 yards from it. Some stone struck him on the chest and caused injuries from which he died the following day. It appeared afterwards that a shot had been prepared by the men at the other end of the canch and it was lighted at the same moment; but the warning from that end, if any warning at all was given, was not clear enough to be understood, and deceased, not expecting a second shot, took the report which he heard for his own.
