Description

There were two fatalities under this heading. Both occurred at Barton Limestone Quarry and were almost identical in character, and were the result of neglecting to take shelter during shot-firing. The first fatality took place on June 5th, and resulted in the death of a quarryman, who took shelter round the corner of a projecting face, instead of going 30 yards to a shelter provided for the purpose. He was struck on the shoulder and hand by a stone weighing about 6 lbs., and afterwards contracted bronchial pneumonia, from which he died eight days after. He was an elderly man, and therefore less able to withstand the shock and subsequent illness.
