Description

John Riley, a coal hewer at Dean and Chapter Colliery, was severely injured by a fall of stone on 10th August, and died the following day in Durham County Hospital.

At the inquest Robert Williams said that Riley had gone for a drink of water and a few minutes later he found him lying on the ground with his legs trapped by the stone. He got him out and had him taken to bank.

Source: Text kindly provided by Jim Grainger from his research into early newspapers (primarily the Durham Advertiser and Durham Chronicle).

Fatalities

Riley, John, aged 23, Hewer, he and another hewer were turning away a split wall out of a wide bord and had kirved 3 feet under in the bottom for a width of 10 feet; they had two jud props set and a hole ready bored at the left side for a shot; when the deputy came in to charge the hole both hewers retired, but Riley at once returned and knocked out the inbye jud prop; the front portion of the jud and also some ramble at once fell away and caught him; there had apparently been a fracture in the ramble, and as it had a smooth parting the weight of the stone was sufficient to break down the front part of the jud when the prop was removed, Buried: St. Charles (RC) Churchyard, Tudhoe Village
