He was an experienced timberer and, along with another man, was retimbering the roof of an old stenton 10 feet wide to make it secure for a roadway; the place was 9½ feet high and they had set four balks which were let in at the ends as well as supported by props; they had practically finished their shift when the deceased ascended a ladder with the intention of pulling down a piece of stone; at the same moment another stone fell away from some rusty joints in the roof and canted out a safety prop; the heavier portion of the stone was beyond the safety prop and caught Dawson and fractured the base of his skull; the stone was known to be given a little but was not considered too bad to work under
