Two fatal accidents occurred under this heading and both were due to falls from the person's own working place. The first happened at Newlandside quarry in Weardale, and resulted in the death of a quarryman who was working on a bench or ledge 3 feet 6 inches in width, about 20 feet above the main bench. He and his marrow had fired a shot which had not dislodged the stone, and while they were working in front of it endeavouring to loosen the base, it suddenly fell away from a damp clay joint of which they had no knowledge. The stone crushed him and rolled him off the ledge and he fell a distance of about 20 feet. The occurrence was purely accidental.
